Indoor Cricket
Indoor cricket is based on the principles of the outdoor version of the game. All the action takes place inside a fully enclosed netted area. The playing area is approximately 30 metres long x 12 metres wide with a roof net over 4 metres high.
Most of the rules of the outdoor game apply but there are some significant changes. Firstly all players must bat and bowl throughout the course of the game regardless of their perceived level of ability. A total of 8 players form the team and they are split into partnerships of two when batting. Each partnership bats for four overs regardless of how many times they are dismissed. In indoor cricket every time a batsman loses a wicket 5 runs are deducted from the teams score. This way each player is able to continue batting for the full compliment of four overs.
Similarly each player on the team is required to bowl 2 overs during the fielding innings. Combining these two innings together constitutes a game of indoor cricket. That is, 4 batting partnerships of 4 overs each total 16 overs of the batting innings. Similarly 8 players bowling 2 overs each total 16 overs of the bowling innings. The batters accumulate a score by hitting the ball into the nets and physically completing a run. Areas of the nets are divided into designated scoring zones and batsmen are awarded runs based on which net they hit.
The entire game is completed in less than 90 minutes and hence is very popular with those unable to commit to the longer version of the game, as well as those that are looking for fun and fitness with their family and friends during the week.
Indoor Netball
Indoor netball is a derivative of traditional netball. The game is played in a fully netted court, in a fully enclosed arena so it is rarely affected by the vagaries of the weather. As the court is fully surrounded by netting there are no unnecessary stoppages of play as the ball never leaves the playing area and this only adds to the already frenetic pace of the game!!
Teams consist of 7 players each and the game is played over 4 x 10 minute quarters. The regular playing positions of netball are used but the players have the added advantage of passing the ball “off the net” to other team members. Also the net can be used to assist when shooting for goals. This leads to a fast paced, high scoring game that really gets the blood pumping!!
Also indoor netball encourages participation by males as well as females by offering both mixed and men’s competitions.
